A safety win for Roxborough Street West: New temporary crosswalk coming soon

Councillor Saxe is pleased to advise that the City is moving forward with the installation of a temporary crosswalk west of Sam Tile and Paul Hahn Lane to keep pedestrians safe during the 1 Roxborough construction. Councillor Saxe’s office is working closely with Transportation Services to fast-track this installation.

How It Works

A Level 2 Type B crossover will be installed that features amber flashing lights you can trigger whenever you need to cross, along with clear pavement markings to ensure drivers see you coming.

Putting Construction Fees to Work

An important part of this this project is how it’s being funded. Construction hubs are a Vision Zero initiative meant to coordinate conflicting right-of-way occupancies, temporary closures, etc. Yonge and Roxborough is covered by the Downtown Hub. The fees paid by developers to “Construction Hubs” were used mostly for internal City staffing costs. However, since the new RODARS permit system now handles those administrative costs Councillor Saxe worked with City staff to repurpose the construction hub fees to be used to pay for temporary infrastructure, enhanced service delivery in construction areas, and other construction impact mitigation requirements. This means this crosswalk will be paid for entirely by the construction industry at zero cost to the taxpayer.

A New Standard for Toronto

This isn’t just a win for our neighbourhood; it’s a model for the whole city. This new approach will benefit the entire city, helping to manage construction impacts on our quality of life while aligning with the goals to limit road occupancy and improve safety and mitigate the impacts of construction on the quality of life. It’s a key part of the commitment to Vision Zero and and aligns with previous changes made by Councillor Saxe to limit construction-related road occupancy.

Councillor Saxe and ABCRA will keep you posted as the installation date is locked in!
