The ABCRA worked with StreetARToronto on the Scrivener Square Underpass Mural Project, which began in the spring of 2024. Five artists, selected by an external Advisory Committee were shortlisted and presented their designs in response to the Scrivener Underpass Mural Project request for proposals.
Local artist Zuna Amir’s design was chosen and a launch celebration was held on October 2, 2024.
Thanks to Councillor Saxe, ABCRA Board member Arlene Desjardins and StreetARToronto for their efforts to move this long-awaited project to completion.
About the mural design concept
A celebration of the past, a nod to the present, and an inspiration for the future – this mural design for the Ramsden, Summerhill, Rosedale community visually narrates the area’s rich history and dynamic evolution. It honours both the natural history and landmarks of the area.
The design includes iconic landmarks and highlights the natural ravines and green spaces vital to indigenous heritage. Abstract winding roads reflect the neighbourhood’s unique street design, while the architectural styles showcase its residential charm. The mural’s split design symbolizes the gradual transition from nature-centric indigenous roots to a historically rich, modern community. Using geometric shapes and a vibrant colours, it celebrates this community’s energetic spirit and historical significance, blending past and present into a cohesive, inspiring, and optimistic future.
About the Artist
Artist Zuna Amir’s design was chosen through the City’s StreetARToronto program community involvement process. Zuna is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her contrasting works emphasize form, line and details as a response to the environments around her. The exploration of colour is a central element in her artwork paired with the illumination of her roots.
Zuna says her goal with all her mural/street art is “to be able to bring some happiness and positive lights into peoples lives through bright colours, fun elements and thought provoking messages. Being able to work with StART will help me get closer to this goal of putting my art out into the city and help liven up elements that would otherwise be overlooked.”
