Park Friends Group Survey Results

At the end of 2014, we asked park groups like yours to fill out our first ever Park Friends Group Impact Survey to help better understand your impact in parks and communities across Toronto. We were thrilled to have a 53% response rate from groups in 34 wards covering every part of the city. This important information highlights the incredible work that community park volunteers are doing and is crucial information for the City as it looks for opportunities to engage with volunteers in parks. Thank you for taking the time to fill out the survey.

Park People will continue to work with park groups like yours in future surveys and explore opportunities to partner with City staff to gather more information as we all work together to support the efforts of community volunteers in parks to build on this positive momentum.

Park friends groups are small but mighty. On average, five residents comprise the core membership of a park friends group, who organize up to three public events per year attracting almost 55,000 people in more than 300 events and activities.

Park friends groups are catalysts for community volunteer engagement. Park friends groups engaged with more than 4,000 volunteers who contributed approximately 18,500 volunteer hours for events, programming, and natural stewardship activities organized by park friends groups.

The number of park friends groups has grown substantially, especially outside of downtown. Of the groups that responded to the survey, 57% were located in Etobicoke, North York, and Scarborough and 75% of these groups had formed in just the last four years and just under 50% were formed in the last two years.
