Electronic and illuminated signs: April UPDATE

In 2013, the City of Toronto initiated a review of electronic and illuminated sign regulations.  Toronto residents and the sign industry were encouraged to participate and provide opinion to City staff about this important issue that will affect the public realm.

The ABC Residents Association (ABCRA) was active on this file.  We encouraged other individuals and residents groups to participate in these consultations and provided suggestions to City Sign Bylaw staff.  The staff report and recommendations were presented to the Planning and Growth Development Committee on April 10th

ABCRA Submissions to the The City’s Planning & Growth Development Committee:

ABCRA letter to Toronto City Hall re Pg 32.2 - Electronic and Illuminated Sign Study...

ABCRA letter to Toronto City Hall re: Pg 32.11 - Regarding Reviewing Sign Districts.

At their April 10th meeting the City's Planning and Growth Management Committee considered staff recommendations and submissions from the sign industry and residents.  After reviewing hearing deputations, including those of ABCRA, the committee referred the report back to the Chief Building Official and Executive Director, Toronto Building for additional review.  The committee also provided direction for this review which will address a number of the concerns raised by ABCRA . They also gave direction that there should be no Third Party Electronic signs in Commercial/Residential, Commercial , Employment and Utility Districts.ABCRA would have preferred that some of the Staff's recommendations be approved in order immediately have better regulations for signs in the Commercial and Residential areas in place however all the recommendations were deferred until 2015.  This means we will need to revisit this file after the election.
