SAFE RAIL COMMUNITIES is a local group responding to the alarming increase in DOT-111 rail tanks carrying crude oil and other hazardous materials on the Canadian Pacific rail line that runs through mid-town Toronto. They are working to increase awareness about the issues related to the transportation of dangerous goods and are advocating for better regulations.

Some of their concerns include :

20% cut to the Federal Governments Rails Safety Budget over the past 5 years

they argue that given the enormous increase in the shipment of crude oil in recent years, coupled with other hazardous materials by rail, cutting resources for Rail safety doesnt make sense.

The Transportation Safety Board  has been warning successive government for over 2 decades that the DOT-111 rail cars are unsafe.

Bill-C-31: The government has repealed the sections in both the Railway Safety Act and The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act that required Transport Canada to make public any proposed regulation changes.

The government also repealed the 90-day consultation period which allowed the public to comment on any proposed changes.

SAFE RAIL COMMUNITIES are well informed, active and organized
